Check out eMusic for the best online music site
eMusic is a terrific online music site that offers loads of independent music at a great price. The site has been around for a long time and is the second largest site next to iTunes. But there is no copy protected music. The music you download you can legally, copy, burn, etc. without restrictions. And because it has the entire Naxos label available for download, there is tons of classical music. And don't be fooled by the independent tag. There's lots of great music you know that is classified as independent. Here's a link that will give you a free trial of 25 downloads.

Expect oodles of eclectic stuff (Zappa, Tom Waits, brit punk, downtempo, 80s funk...).
Expect the TOP in jazz. (artists like Miles, Monk, Coltrane, Holiday, Ellington...; labels like Fantasy, Riverside, Concord...)
Expect the TOP in classical music, especially with the coming of the Naxos, BIS and Telarc labels.
Expect some terrific Canadian content - Barenaked Ladies, the entire Blue Rodeo library, Swollen Members, Peaches, Wild Strawberries, Moka Only, Bruce Co*ckburn, K&A McGarrigle, Ron Sexsmith, Daniel Lanois, Oscar Peterson, Liona Boyd, Anton Kuerti...
Expect daily new additions to keep the addiction going.
Oh, one thing to keep in mind, apparently:
to get the free downloads, you do need to sign up with a credit card. From what I heard, don't exceed the free downloads or you're on the hook for the first month. Cancelling is easy.
